62nd Africa Day Observed with Focus on Justice and Reparations for Africans

Ouagadougou: The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Regional Cooperation and Burkinabe Abroad organized the 62nd Africa Day on Monday, May 26, 2025, in collaboration with the African Group of Ambassadors accredited to Burkina Faso. The event focused on the theme "Justice for Africans and people of African descent through reparations" and was chaired by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Regional Cooperation and Burkinabe Abroad.

According to Burkina Information Agency, HE Karamoko Jean Marie TRAORE emphasized the importance of acknowledging Africa's past, noting that slavery, colonization, and deportation are crimes against humanity that cannot be erased by history. He remarked that the call for justice is not about revenge but about creating a future grounded in recognition, memory, dignity, and freedom. The celebration serves as a moment for Africans to reflect on the progress and challenges of continental integration and to honor the sacrifices made by the founding fathers of the African Union.

The observance of Africa Day this year occurs amid Burkina Faso's ongoing struggle against terrorism, highlighting the need for unity, fraternity, and solidarity among Africans. The Minister stated that the celebration is an opportunity to advocate for a sovereign Africa that resists all forms of domination and interference.

HE Mr. Youssef SLAOUI, the Ambassador of the Kingdom of Morocco and Dean of African Ambassadors in Burkina Faso, noted that the joint celebration of Africa Day acts as a platform to address reparations for the damage suffered by Africa, a topic of debate since independence. He emphasized the importance of focusing on the continent's future and its role on the international stage.

Africa Day is commemorated annually on May 25. This year, the 62nd observance featured a panel discussion on the theme and a cultural and gastronomic exhibition showcasing the diverse African countries represented at the event.
