Ouagadougou: President Donald Trump has taken a significant step in strengthening ties between the United States and Burkina Faso by dispatching US Under Secretary of State for West Africa, Will Stevens, to the Burkinabe capital. The visit, which took place on May 27, 2025, was aimed at reiterating the United States' commitment to fostering a robust relationship with Burkina Faso.
According to Burkina Information Agency, Under Secretary Stevens was warmly received by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Regional Cooperation and Burkinabe Abroad during his evening arrival. Stevens conveyed President Trump's message, emphasizing the importance of a pragmatic relationship grounded in mutual respect and sovereignty. The discussions revolved around exploring opportunities for cooperation, particularly in trade and security, to strengthen the partnership between the two nations.
Minister Karamoko Jean Marie Traor© expressed appreciation for the US initiative, highlighting the importance of firsthand engagement to enhance bilateral relations. He underscored Burkina Faso's commitment to establishing strategic partnerships that respect its sovereignty and contribute to building a strong nation.
Minister Traor© also addressed security concerns, pointing out challenges faced by countries grappling with terrorism, including restrictions on acquiring essential war materials. In response, the US Deputy Assistant Secretary of State pledged to actively work towards resolving these issues and advancing efforts against terrorism in the region.
The American envoy further emphasized the goal of restoring mutual trust and fostering a new cooperative dynamic between Ouagadougou and Washington, distancing from previous controversial remarks by General Langley that had stirred global reactions.
