Dori: The Secretary General of the Sahel region, Auguste Kinda, has officially launched the first edition of the Sahel Regional Non-Timber Forest Products (NTFP) Fair in Dori. The event, centered around the theme "Contribution of non-timber forest products to the health and nutritional security of populations," aims to promote and enhance the potential of local natural resources.
According to Burkina Information Agency, the fair serves as a platform for producers, processors, and traders of NTFPs to meet, exchange, and market their products. The event attracted a large audience, including administrative authorities, technical and financial partners, and the residents of Dori, who were eager to explore the variety of products on display.
Dramane Fogo, the regional director of Environment, Water and Sanitation for the Sahel, emphasized that the initiative is part of a national strategy to promote non-timber forest products. He mentioned that the Dori fair is the second of its kind nationally, following an event in Ouagadougou in 2024. Fogo highlighted the role of products like shea, nere, tamarind, and baobab in supporting food security and the economic resilience of rural communities.
Fogo urged stakeholders to adopt sustainable practices to protect natural resources, ensuring the longevity of NTFPs, which he described as ecological and economic treasures. Auguste Kinda echoed these sentiments, underscoring the value of non-timber forest products for rural communities, particularly in terms of dietary diversification and economic security for women and young people.
Exhibitor Cisse Adjaratou from Oudalan showcased products derived from jujube, moringa, baobab, and balanites. She expressed that the fair offers a significant opportunity for rural women to promote their products, engage with other stakeholders, and find new commercial outlets.
The organizers aim for the fair to boost the visibility of industry players and foster greater commitment to preserving forest resources, ensuring a sustainable future for Sahelian communities.
