Libreville: The Gabonese interim Minister of Sports, Dr. Simplice Desire Mamboula, announced the suspension of the national team until further notice, along with the dissolution of the team's technical staff, following their recent defeat against Ivory Coast with a score of 2-3.
According to Burkina Information Agency, the decision came as no surprise given Gabon's performance in the group stage of the AFCON 2025, marking their third defeat. The outcome against Ivory Coast seemed to be the tipping point.
The Gabonese government, through the acting Minister of Sports, also called on the Gabonese Football Federation (Fegafoot) to "take responsibility" and announced the exclusion of two key players from the team, namely Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Bruno Ecuele Manga.
This announcement aligns with the statement made by the President of the Republic, Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema, who had earlier indicated that he would take decisive actions to address the governance issues in national sports, which have been a subject of public criticism for some time.
