Ouagadougou: The Burkinabe government has formalized the establishment of the University Centre of Gaoua as a fully functioning university, now named "Sib Sie Faustin University" (U2SF) in homage to one of the pioneers of scientific research in the land of Upright Men.According to Burkina Information Agency, with this decree adopted in the Council of Ministers on February 5, the Burkinabe authorities intend to honor the memory of a statesman and an emeritus academic, who died in 2019 at the age of 80. Born in 1939 in Kampti, in the Southwest Region, Sib Sie Faustin embodied post-independence academic excellence. After scientific studies in Bobo-Dioulasso and Ouagadougou, he went to France where he earned a doctorate in physical sciences from Paris VI University in 1974.Upon his return to his country in 1975, he became a pillar of the University of Ouagadougou, which was then undergoing significant restructuring. Appointed full professor of organic chemistry in 1986, he was the architect of the postgraduat e chemistry program and played a leading role in the creation of the Institute of Mathematics and Physical Sciences (IMP).Beyond the lecture halls, Professor Sib Sie Faustin made his mark on Burkinabe public life by holding the position of Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research between 1980 and 1982. Former dean of the Faculty of Science and Technology, he also made his mark regionally by becoming the first president of the West African Chemical Society (SOACHIM).The man whom his peers described as a "discreet builder" leaves behind a considerable legacy. In addition to his academic career, he distinguished himself from a young age through his involvement in associations, holding the position of first national general secretary of the Catholic Student Youth (JEC) in 1954. By naming the University of Gaoua after him, Burkina Faso is honoring "the image of a man whose scientific and human legacy continues to inspire lastingly," it is emphasized.
