Ouagadougou: Arriving at the instruction of Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, the Algerian delegation intends, "openly and sincerely," to share with Burkina Faso its experience and expertise related to hydrocarbon exploitation and the entire value chain, within the framework of South-South cooperation. Composed of several ministers, the delegation spent 48 hours in Ouagadougou for working sessions that culminated in the signing of a memorandum of understanding on February 13, 2026.
According to Burkina Information Agency, the delegation was welcomed by the Minister of Mines and Quarries, Yacouba Zabr© Gouba, and taken to the Thomas Sankara memorial. The delegation expressed admiration for Burkina Faso and the values championed by Thomas Sankara. Algerian Minister of State, Minister of Hydrocarbons and Mines, Mohamed Arkab, paid tribute to Sankara's commitment to sovereignty and social justice, drawing parallels with Algeria's own fight for sovereignty during its 1954 revolution.
The Burkinabe Minister of Mines described the results of the discussions as satisfactory, highlighting the strengthening of bilateral cooperation in energy, mining, and hydrocarbons. Four thematic groups were created to implement the collaboration. The minister expressed gratitude to the Algerian delegation, particularly to Mohamed Arkab, for their efforts in outlining prospects for collaboration.
Mohamed Arkab welcomed the meetings as laying foundations for cooperation in the areas discussed, confirming Algeria's readiness to support Burkina Faso in exploiting hydrocarbons, mines, and energy. The parties worked on themes including mining, quarrying, and local content, focusing on human resources, value chains, and local production.
In energy and capacity building, they committed to sharing experiences and strengthening partnerships. On hydrocarbons, they agreed to develop geoscientific studies in the Taoudeni Basin and explored cooperation mechanisms between Sonatrach and SONABHY. Opportunities for LPG supply cooperation and infrastructure expertise were also discussed.
