Ioba: The Water and Forest Combat Unit (UCEF) of Djikologo has apprehended 166 individuals and seized a significant amount of equipment in the Bontioli classified forest during 'Operation RATEL 1'. This operation was initiated to address illegal activities and secure the forest area.
According to Burkina Information Agency, the primary objective of Operation RATEL 1 is to eliminate illegal artisanal gold mining activities within the Bontioli classified forest. Commander RATEL emphasized that the mission is crucial for preventing further degradation of the vegetation and soil. "Our mission is to secure this forest by combating illegal artisanal gold mining," he stated. Additionally, he highlighted the operation's role in countering potential terrorist threats, as individuals with malicious intent might infiltrate the ranks of gold miners. This dual purpose led to numerous arrests during the operation.
The operation resulted in the apprehension of 166 individuals, along with the confiscation of various equipment including 2 motorized tricycles, 2 motorcycles, 13 water pumps, 5 vacuum cleaners, 42 bicycles, 5 pulleys, 315 plastic and aluminum basins, and 2 rolls of hose. Commander Ratel noted, "All those arrested have been handed over to the Djikologo forestry post, which has the authority to identify them and follow up on this case."
In a compassionate approach, women and children detained during the operation were released after participating in awareness sessions about the prohibition of activities in the protected forest. Furthermore, parents of school-aged children were encouraged to ensure their children return to school.
