Kadiogo: Community health workers (CHWs) and health workers from the areas of Zagtouli, Boulmiougou, and Tanghin Dassouri are mobilized to raise awareness among the population about the prevention and fight against gout.
According to Burkina Information Agency, the campaign was initiated by the non-governmental organization (NGO) Mwangaza Action, in collaboration with the Boulmiougou health district. This campaign is scheduled to take place from April 22 to 24, 2026, in markets and concessions. Its primary goal is to promote the early detection of signs of the disease and encourage the adoption of good eating habits.
At the Zongo neighborhood market, vendors and shoppers listened to the messages delivered by community health workers, led by Dr. Carine Sawadogo, head physician of the Zagtouli Urban Medical Center. The health workers emphasized that gout prevention relies on simple measures, such as prioritizing fruit consumption, drinking plenty of water, and engaging in regular physical activity. They also recommend that people get tested at health centers to detect the disease early.
The outreach workers explained that gout is exacerbated by several factors, including a diet high in red meat, excessive consumption of alcohol and sugary drinks, as well as certain foods such as cabbage and beans. The disease is linked to an increase in uric acid levels in the body and manifests as joint pain, particularly in the big toe, which can cause significant discomfort in daily activities, explained Dr. Carine Sawadogo.
In the commune of Tanghin Dassouri, health workers are conducting door-to-door campaigns to raise awareness about the causes, consequences, and prevention of the disease. Basile Kima, a campaign participant, expressed satisfaction with the interest shown by the population at the end of the sessions.
