Tenkodogo: The governor of the Nakamb© region, Yiy© Abraham Somdo, presided on Wednesday in Tenkodogo over the opening of the information and awareness seminar for socio-economic actors organized as part of the celebration of World Metrology Day, 2026 edition.
According to Burkina Information Agency, this activity, initiated by the Burkinabe Agency for Standardization, Metrology and Quality, aims to promote a culture of quality, reliable measurements and consumer protection. Placed under the theme "Metrology to strengthen confidence in policymaking", this year's commemoration highlights the role of reliable measurements in public decision-making.
Representing the Director General of ABNORM, the Director of Metrology, Issa Sawadogo, indicated that this day pays tribute to the actors who work in laboratories and technical structures to guarantee accurate measurements for the benefit of the population. "The goal is to make metrological services more accessible to the population and to protect consumers," he explained. According to him, a free verification and calibration campaign for measuring instruments was launched from May 19 to 21, 2026, in Tenkodogo. It specifically concerns scales used in fish markets, butcher shops, boutiques, and some public health centers.
Mr. Sawadogo explained that this initiative also contributes to improving services in the healthcare sector through reliable measuring instruments. In his opening speech delivered on behalf of the Minister in charge of Commerce, Governor Yiy© Abraham Somdo recalled that metrology is an indispensable tool in trade, health services, industry, agriculture and consumer protection. He invited participants to pay close attention to the various presentations scheduled during the seminar in order to better understand the issues related to the quality and accuracy of measurements.
The representative of the regional director of Commerce of Nakamb©, Zakaria Badiel, welcomed the choice of the region to host this activity. According to him, this seminar will help strengthen the capacity of socio-economic actors regarding metrology standards and requirements. He invited participants to pay particular attention to the various technical communications which will focus in particular on the missions of ABNORM, the metrological requirements applicable to the weight of bread as well as the theme of the 2026 edition of World Metrology Day.
Created to ensure the implementation of national policy on standardization and metrology, ABNORM works to promote reliable measures to guarantee fair trade and better consumer protection. World Metrology Day is celebrated every May 20 to commemorate the signing of the Metre Convention in 1875, a foundational text for international cooperation in measurement.
