Houet: The name of Thomas Sankara now resonates in one of Europe's major capitals. A public park located in the heart of Rome officially bears the name of the former president of Burkina Faso, an initiative hailed by Burkinabe authorities as international recognition of the legacy of the father of the Democratic and Popular Revolution.
According to Burkina Information Agency, the space named 'Parco Thomas Sankara' was officially inaugurated on September 21, 2025, in a central district of the Italian capital. At the park's entrance, a plaque reads: "Thomas Sankara (1949-1987), President of Burkina Faso." When asked about the significance of this tribute, the Ambassador of Burkina Faso to Italy, Comrade Cyrille Ganou Badolo, expressed her satisfaction.
"It is a source of pride for us to know that, in a European country, the father of the Revolution is appreciated and honored to the point that a park is dedicated to him. This makes us proud of our country and our history," she declared. According to the diplomat, this recognition is the result of the work carried out by Burkinabe diplomacy to promote the history and ideals of Thomas Sankara with his Italian partners. She explained that the mayor of the district in question, moved by the career and ideals of the former Burkinabe head of state, brought the project before the competent authorities until he obtained the necessary approval to name the park after him.
During a site visit, the AIB noted that the park offers a relaxing and recreational environment appreciated by local residents. It includes public benches, children's play areas with swings, outdoor sports equipment, and wooded areas that encourage walking and relaxation. Currently, the site is maintained by Rome's municipal services. However, the Burkinabe authorities hope to eventually enrich the park with elements that better reflect Thomas Sankara's legacy, particularly through commemorative works or cultural facilities.
The ambassador also took the opportunity to thank the Italian authorities for their support in several matters concerning Burkina Faso, including the acquisition of a building to house the Burkinabe embassy in Rome. Beyond its symbolic dimension, the creation of Thomas Sankara Park testifies to the international influence of the former Burkinabe president, whose ideals continue to inspire far beyond African borders.
