Ouagadougou: The President of Thomas Sankara University (UTS), Professor T. Didier Zoungrana, on Saturday launched the planting of 250 seedlings in the university’s thematic grove, as part of National Tree Day and the 2026 national reforestation campaign.
According to Burkina Information Agency, a total of 250 plants of different species were planted in an area of 2 hectares. This initiative saw the active participation of university authorities, teachers, students, and administrative staff. The president of UTS, Professor T. Didier Zoungrana, emphasized that the initiative aligns with the vision of creating an ecological university, honoring the environmental protection ideals of Thomas Sankara.
Professor Zoungrana further explained that the creation of groves was part of the university’s design to contribute to campus greening and to provide a practical learning environment for students, particularly those in scientific fields like plant ecology. He described the tree planting as a significant patriotic action with an important ecological impact and encouraged the university community to engage in protecting and caring for the plants to ensure their survival.
He also assured that the site is equipped with an irrigation system and has staff responsible for the regular maintenance of the trees. Moussa Yameogo, a law student involved in the grove’s upkeep, stated that the initiative is an investment for both current and future generations, benefiting students and local communities alike. He urged his classmates to support the initiative, highlighting its benefits for students.
This campaign underscores Thomas Sankara University’s ambition to become a model of a green campus, integrating education, research, and a sustainable ecological commitment. National Tree Day and the 2026 National Reforestation Campaign are being held under the theme: “My concession, my tree”.
