Ouagadougou: The Minister of Security, Mahamadou Sana, officially launched the inaugural National Police Scientific Days, an initiative designed to leverage science, research, and innovation to modernize and enhance the efficiency of the police force in addressing contemporary security challenges.
According to Burkina Information Agency, the first edition, running from June 24 to 26, 2026, is themed “Science, innovation and technological sovereignty: what levers for a modern and more effective police force?”. During the opening ceremony, Minister Sana paid tribute to the defense forces, particularly those who sacrificed their lives for national security. He highlighted that current security threats like terrorism and organized crime necessitate enhanced intervention techniques grounded in scientific and technological advancements.
Mahamadou Sana emphasized that utilizing data, artificial intelligence, scientific and technical police methods, secure information systems, and digital tools are pivotal in building a sovereign, intelligent, and efficient security framework. He expressed optimism that the event would foster concrete recommendations and enduring partnerships between the National Police and academic and research institutions.
Thierry Dofizouho Tuina, the Director General of the National Police, noted that the Scientific Days mark a significant milestone in transforming the police institution. He stated that the event aims to bridge the gap between security forces and the scientific community to uncover talents and develop localized solutions tailored to the operational needs of the National Police.
Tuina also urged researchers, academics, experts, and police officers to channel their creativity towards achieving technological sovereignty by crafting “Made in Burkina Faso” digital tools, equipment, and solutions that bolster the country’s strategic autonomy in security matters.
Adjima Thombiano, the Minister of Higher Education, Research and Innovation and sponsor of the ceremony, praised the initiative for its potential to strengthen the connection between scientific research and the operational demands of the defense and security forces. He stressed that science holds true value when it delivers concrete solutions to societal issues, and he encouraged Burkinab¨ researchers, universities, research centers, startups, and young developers to collaborate in harnessing national innovations for security and technological sovereignty.
