Gaoua: Administrative authorities from the border regions of Burkina Faso and Ghana began a meeting in Gaoua on Monday to finalize the action plan for the cross-border consultation framework. The meeting, chaired by the governor of the Dj´r´ region, Siaka Barro, aims to provide the two countries with an operational tool for cooperation to jointly address security, economic, and social challenges in the border areas.
According to Burkina Information Agency, the meeting brought together a large delegation from the Ghanaian border regions as well as the governors of the Burkinabe regions concerned, accompanied by their technical staff. At the opening of the proceedings, Governor Siaka Barro recalled the historical relations of cooperation and fraternity that unite Burkina Faso and Ghana.
He indicated that the populations living on both sides of the border face common challenges, particularly in terms of security, transhumance, the mobility of people and goods, and local development, hence the need for concerted responses. "This session is in line with the commitments made by the governors of the border regions of the two countries during their previous meeting in P´, which took place from June 18 to 21, 2026, and which allowed the validation and signing of the convention establishing the cross-border framework between the border regions of Burkina Faso and the Republic of Ghana," he explained.
He specified that the action plan, developed by the technical teams, will strengthen cross-border cooperation, improve the living conditions of the populations, promote peace, security, and social cohesion, while fostering harmonious development of border areas. The governor also highlighted the willingness of the Burkinabe and Ghanaian authorities to institutionalize annual meetings between the governors of the border regions in order to ensure regular monitoring of actions taken and to jointly address common concerns.
The governor invited participants to prioritize constructive exchanges in order to arrive at a consensual, realistic, and applicable document, before declaring the work open. The Ghanaian regional minister, head of the delegation, Donatus Atanga, welcomed the reception given to his team before explaining that this meeting marks a decisive step in the process initiated in P´.
He indicated that the action plan aims to strengthen cooperation in development, security, and social cohesion for the benefit of populations established on both sides of the border. The Ghanaian official noted that the two countries share strong historical, cultural, and linguistic ties. He also pointed out that this dynamic of cooperation benefits from the commitment of the presidents of Burkina Faso, Captain Ibrahim Traor©, and Ghana, John Dramani Mahama, who intend to make their shared border an area of peace, stability, and shared prosperity.
At the end of the discussions, which take place over two days, the participants are expected to validate the action plan which will serve as a roadmap for joint interventions by Burkina Faso and Ghana in border areas, with the aim of consolidating bilateral cooperation for the benefit of the populations.
