Ahamad-Donald-Ibn Oumar Ki Achieves High Marks for Wastewater Treatment Thesis

Ouagadougou: Ahamad-Donald-Ibn Oumar Ki, a Master's student in chemistry at Nazi Boni University (UNB) in Bobo-Dioulasso, obtained a grade of 17/20 after the defense of his thesis on Tuesday, July 28, 2026, in the presence of parents and friends.

According to Burkina Information Agency, the thesis, titled "Synthesis and characterization of carbon materials of the carbon dot and g-CN type: application to the photocatalytic degradation of the methylene blue dye," focuses on finding solutions for wastewater treatment, particularly from the dyeing of koko-dunda, which may contain synthetic dyes.

In his research, Ki synthesized and characterized photocatalytic materials such as carbon dots and g-CN (graphitic carbon nitride). Notably, the carbon dots were synthesized from biomass, specifically orange peels.

The study also explored the preparation of carbon dot/g-CN hybrid materials for the photocatalytic degradation of methylene blue, a synthetic dye. This process relies on materials that, when exposed to light, facilitate the breakdown of organic molecules in water.

This research offers new prospects for developing treatment processes for effluents from dyeing activities. The thesis was conducted in the Chemistry Department of the Training and Research Unit in Exact and Applied Sciences, under the supervision of Professor Constantin Manienou Dabire and co-supervision of Dr. Amidou Tall.

After his defense, Ahamad-Donald-Ibn Oumar Ki expressed satisfaction with both the process and the grade he received, viewing it as a culmination of months of dedicated work and research.
