Ouagadougou: A new chapter in Burkina Faso's engagement with the United Nations began as the Burkinabe Minister of Foreign Affairs, Karamoko Jean-Marie Traor©, officially received the cabinet letter of Njoya Tikum, the newly appointed Resident Coordinator of the United Nations System in the country. This appointment concludes the interim period managed by Maurice Azonnonkpo.

According to Burkina Information Agency, Njoya Tikum, a Cameroonian national who also serves as a Humanitarian Coordinator and security clearance officer, was appointed on July 18, 2026, by the United Nations Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres. At the ceremony, Tikum expressed his gratitude to the Burkinabe authorities for their acceptance and shared his commitment to building upon the actions of his interim predecessor. He emphasized his intention to align his efforts with the Burkinabe government's vision, focusing on support and active listening.

This development signifies a revitalized relationship between Burkina Faso and the UN, following the departure of two previous Resident Coordinators. Barbara Manzi and Carol Flore-Smereczniak were declared persona non grata in December 2022 and August 2025, respectively. The foreign minister welcomed the outcome of dialogue with the UN, lauding the organization's dedication to fostering trust, openness, and sincerity with its partners.

In addition to Tikum's appointment, the new Country Representative of the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), No«l Koutera Bataka from Togo, also presented his credentials. Bataka expressed his desire to collaborate with IFAD partners, including the Ministry of Agriculture, while adhering to national priorities.

Minister Traor© assured both diplomats of his department's readiness to support them in their missions, highlighting the mutual commitment to successful cooperation.
