Ouagadougou: The 5th edition of the Unity Cup kicks off in Leo: The second vice-president of the special delegation of Leo, Moussa Sawadogo, representing the prefect, president of the special delegation, Kassoum Koalaga, officially kicked off the 5th edition of the Unity Cup, on Saturday, August 1, 2026, at the Zio Abdoulaye municipal stadium in Leo.
According to Burkina Information Agency, this edition is themed "Sport, a melting pot of unity, resilience and civic engagement for sustainable development". In the opening match, FC Nouvelle defeated FC Watinooma 3-0. Held under the banner of fraternity and social cohesion, the launch ceremony of the 5th edition of the Unity Cup brought together a large audience at the Zio Abdoulaye municipal stadium in Leo.
The competition is promoted by Kassoum Sissao and has received the blessings of His Majesty Lio-Pio Dan-Zw¨, chief of the canton of Leo, represented for the occasion by the chief of the village of Sissili. Speaking on behalf of the special delegation from Leo, Second Vice-President Moussa Sawadogo welcomed the popular enthusiasm generated by the event. For him, sport remains a powerful lever for bringing people together and integrating them. This 5th edition marks a major turning point in the tournament's history. As explained by the president of the organizing committee, Fabrice Yago, the competition is abandoning the Maracana format of previous years to now be played 11 against 11 on a full-size pitch. In total, 22 teams from the city of Leo and surrounding municipalities are involved in this edition, the grand final of which is scheduled for September 5th.
The first phase will be played in a knockout format to qualify 11 teams, which will be joined by the 5 best losing teams to form the round of 16 bracket. Comrade Yago took the opportunity to launch an appeal for popular mobilization, while advocating values ??of impartiality and discipline. "What we advocate above all is unity, fraternity and fair play. We invite the public to come in large numbers in a positive spirit to warmly encourage all the teams," he urged.
