Ouagadougou: The first edition of the Founzan Departmental Tree Day (JDA) was successfully held in the village of Lollio, focusing on the theme 'Trees, symbols of community resilience and social cohesion.' This event, which took place on Saturday, August 22, 2026, aimed to combat the degradation of natural resources within the department.
According to Burkina Information Agency, over 500 seedlings were planted at the Lollio site during this inaugural event. The newly established grove was named "N'Djoaa," which translates to "cheese-bearing tree" in the Bwamou language. Participants were given a practical demonstration to learn the techniques and steps necessary for successful planting. The ceremony was attended by administrative, traditional, religious, military, and paramilitary authorities, alongside residents of the Founzan commune.
Dofiniyetuan Lodoun, head of the Founzan Departmental Water and Forestry Service, highlighted the issue of land and vegetation degradation in the department, attributing it to human activities and climate change. Mr. Lodoun stressed the importance of restoring vegetation cover through reforestation and the rational management of forest resources as a key measure to address these environmental challenges.
He urged public services, farmers' organizations, associations, and cooperative societies to take responsibility for the reforestation campaign and ensure the maintenance of the planted seedlings. He expressed that the Departmental Tree Day is intended to increase enthusiasm for reforestation and the preservation of existing forest resources.
Wahabo Kabor, president of the Founzan municipal special delegation (PDS), commended the community's involvement, seeing the initiative as a reflection of their commitment to restoring natural resources and combating their degradation. He encouraged the community to draw inspiration from trees, which symbolize "perseverance, resistance, adaptability, fighting spirit, and resilience."
The PDS also emphasized the need for the rational management of natural resources, particularly forests, highlighting that their preservation is a duty to both present and future generations. The event was attended by provincial authorities from Tuy, including the provincial secretary general, Dieudonn Zeida, and the provincial director of water and forests, Nebila Paulin Bationo.
