Ouagadougou: Ten widows benefit from a micro-project for raising chickens with a total cost of 4 million CFA francs. The Youth in Motion for Development Association (AJEM-D) launched this initiative in Koupla on Saturday, August 22, 2026, aiming to support widows with school-aged children. The project was inaugurated by the Governor of the Nakamb region, Yy Abraham Somdo.
According to Burkina Information Agency, the project will provide each widow with five hens and one rooster, alongside essential breeding equipment, support for building a chicken coop, technical advice, and ongoing support. The initiative, which costs a total of 4 million CFA francs, is being implemented across six communes in the Kourittenga province: Koupla, Pouytenga, Andemtenga, Baskour, Tensobtenga, and Gounghin. It is co-financed by the Burkinabe Fundraising Association (ABF) with technical backing from the Provincial Directorate in charge of Agriculture of Kourittenga.
Alain Dsir Zoungrana, head of AJEM-D, emphasized that the initiative aims to enhance the living conditions of widows and their children by promoting family poultry farming. He stated, "This needs to bear fruit. The focus is on orphaned children. If the widow is self-sufficient, she will not hesitate to help her children, especially with their schooling."
The wife of His Majesty Naaba Yemd of Koupla, who patronized the event, lauded the initiative as a step towards endogenous development, aligning with the vision of Comrade Ibrahim Traor, the President of Faso. She encouraged the beneficiaries to utilize the support effectively to improve their living conditions and those of their children.
The beneficiaries received training on breeding techniques, feeding, hygiene, disease prevention, and poultry business management. This is intended to equip them with the necessary knowledge to manage their livestock farms effectively and ensure the project's sustainability.
Governor Yy Abraham Somdo emphasized the importance of local initiatives in bolstering state development efforts. He stated, "Now more than ever, we need everyone to take initiatives to support the State. We came to say that there are no small development actions." He highlighted that all initiatives contributing to improving living conditions also contribute to national development.
The Governor further explained that this project enables the women to live with dignity, ultimately supporting the nation's sovereignty and active participation in nation-building.
