Niamey: During the night of August 28-29, 2026, around 00:20, a group of soldiers in breach of military regulations attempted to sequester some of their comrades within the barracks of Base 101 in Niamey and to carry out firing on some sensitive sites in the capital, reports a statement from the Ministry of National Defense read on national television.

According to Burkina Information Agency, the prompt reaction of the defense and security forces made it possible to contain this unrest and gradually regain control of these sites. The Ministry of Defense assures the public of the situation being under control and invites "the population to remain calm and go about their business freely."
