Ouagadougou: Security forces conducted an awareness campaign on Friday, August 28, 2026 in Bittou, called 'Head Shield', dedicated to respecting the mandatory wearing of helmets. The initiative raised awareness among 483 road users and invited those travelling without helmets to turn back and get into compliance.
According to Burkina Information Agency, the operation mobilized officers from the Bittou district police station, the Republican Security Company (CRS), and the municipal police. Starting at 6:00 a.m., teams were deployed to several strategic intersections in the city to remind motorcyclists of the importance of wearing helmets.
The initiators stated that this action aims to strengthen road safety and encourage users to adopt the mandatory wearing of helmets and to protect their own safety. Those stopped without helmets were given a warning and then asked to return and retrieve their protective equipment before continuing their journey.
The operation was carried out without any fines being issued or vehicles being confiscated. Among those stopped was Issa Balima, a resident of Tenkodogo, who was riding without a helmet. He acknowledged the importance of this equipment, while explaining why he hadn't worn one. "I sell helmets and I know the importance of wearing a helmet. But my helmet is broken and I was just about to go and get another one," he explained.
Another motorcyclist, Simbr Nooraogo, from the village of Zkk, was also made aware of the rules after being seen riding his motorcycle without a helmet. He welcomed the authorities' initiative and acknowledged that helmets help reduce the risk of serious injuries in accidents. "It's not a refusal to respect the law. I was with a child, and last night I was in a hurry to get to the hospital. That's why I forgot my helmet," he said.
Led by police commissioner Assami Sawadogo, the "Head Shield" operation proceeded without incident. At the end of the activity, Commissioner Assami Sawadogo invited the population to respect the regulations in force and urged users to systematically wear their helmets before any motorcycle journey.
