Nahouri: Selling local fish, a lucrative activity: Fixed along the banks of the Vuhu River, a tributary of the Mouhoun, fishermen and traders offer fresh fish to customers, an activity that mobilizes men and women of different ages in several riverside villages, AIB observed on Monday, September 14, 2026.

According to Burkina Information Agency, the sale of fresh fish has been practiced for several years in this area and constitutes an important source of income for fishermen, as well as for the vendors located along the Vuhu. Among the species offered are Nile perch, carp, catfish, and eel. At the fishermen's stalls, a kilogram of fish sells for between 800 and 850 CFA francs.

For Ousmane Oudraogo, a fisherman from Ddougou, this activity is particularly profitable. He claims to have been practicing it for about forty years. 'I have two sites, namely Bourasso and Sikoro. Since I started this season, I can earn between 50,000 and 100,000 CFA francs per day,' he said.

For traders, this activity also represents a source of income. Elisabeth Nana, a vendor from Ddougou who has been active since the beginning of the season, says she makes significant profits from selling fish. 'I'm not complaining at all. This business allows me to live with dignity and provide for my needs. I can make between 10,000 and 15,000 CFA francs in profit per day. The income from this activity has allowed me to realize some personal projects,' she confided.

Despite its profitability, the sector faces some difficulties, notably the drop in the water level of the Vuhu. 'When the water level drops, fish become scarce. There is also the impassability of the Bourasso-Sikoro road when it rains heavily,' explained Ousmane Oudraogo.

According to stakeholders, implementing a few simple improvements could help enhance the conditions of this activity and strengthen the local fresh fish sector, while also promoting income generation and local economic development.
