Police Enforce Helmet Regulations in Kongoussi

Kongoussi:Police in Kongoussi initiated a crackdown on helmet non-compliance, immobilizing 115 motorcycles and one tricycle during a city-wide operation.

According to Burkina Information Agency, the operation by the National and Municipal Police began early on Thursday, focusing on major intersections to ensure motorcyclists were wearing helmets. A total of 116 vehicles were seized and impounded at the central police station for helmet violations, as stated by Police Captain Kuilga Jules Nebi©, who leads the control unit.

This enforcement action aligns with the Ministry of Security's directive that, starting October 1, 2026, not wearing a helmet will be punishable. Vehicle owners must wear a helmet and pay a fine of 3,000 FCFA to retrieve their impounded vehicles. Captain Nebi© noted that some riders were attaching helmets to their motorcycles rather than wearing them.

One affected motorcyclist, Aboubakar Sawadogo from Birou, was stopped because his helmet was hanging on his vehicle instead of being worn. He was at the police station with his helmet and registration, waiting for the ticketing process.

Captain Nebi© emphasized the police's commitment to enforcing helmet use until it becomes standard practice. This operation follows previous awareness campaigns, including one on August 18, which checked nearly 700 road users and temporarily impounded vehicles of those not wearing helmets.
