Police Enforce Helmet Crackdown in Kaya Following Safety Campaign

Kaya:The National Police initiated a crackdown in Kaya on October 1, 2026, targeting drivers of two- and three-wheeled vehicles who were not wearing helmets. This action follows a directive from the Minister of Security issued on September 15, 2026, resulting in the impounding of several dozen vehicles.According to Burkina Information Agency, traffic police were stationed at main intersections throughout the city to monitor compliance. Offending drivers were directed to the Kouls Regional Directorate of the National Police, where they paid a fine of 3,000 CFA francs to retrieve their vehicles.Chief Superintendent Larba Salambanga, regional director of the National Police in Kouls, explained that this enforcement stage comes after nearly two years of awareness efforts, which began in November 2024. These efforts focused on educational institutions and road users, with the support of the National Road Safety Office (ONASER). Following the campaign, drivers without helmets were initially turned back to retri eve one before continuing their journey.Salambanga noted some behavioral changes due to these initiatives but acknowledged that full compliance has not yet been achieved. Enhanced enforcement measures are planned for the region in the coming days.Police Adjutant Kabor Jean Marie, serving as a junction chief, highlighted ongoing challenges with some individuals who resist wearing helmets. Despite long-term awareness efforts, some users still claim to forget or improperly wear their helmets. He stressed the critical role of helmet use in reducing accident severity and urged consistent compliance to achieve safety objectives set by the authorities.
