Operation “Head Shield” Launches in Bogand with 30 Motorcycles Impounded

Ouagadougou:On the first day of Operation "Head Shield," security forces impounded thirty motorcycles in Bogand as part of an initiative to enforce the mandatory helmet law. The operation, conducted by forty-eight officers, targeted twelve strategic locations across the city.

According to Burkina Information Agency, the initiative began at seven o'clock with the National Police, auxiliary security volunteers (VADS), and agents of the Penitentiary Security Guard (GSP) monitoring both primary and secondary roads. The operation aimed to ensure compliance with the General Directorate of the National Police's directive from September 29, 2026, which mandates helmet use nationwide starting October 1.

During the five-hour operation, all impounded vehicles were found in violation of the helmet law. Offenders were directed to the Bogand police station, informed about the helmet requirement, and fined. To retrieve their vehicles, offenders must present a helmet and pay a fine of 3,000 FCFA.

Observations during the operation indicated growing acceptance of the helmet mandate, with most motorcyclists adhering to the rule. However, some non-compliance was noted, with helmets improperly stored on handlebars or between legs instead of being worn.

The provincial director of the National Police in Gnagna, Chief Commissioner of Police Issa Congo, acknowledged the positive behavioral shift among road users. He emphasized the importance of the helmet mandate in enhancing road safety.

Challenges were encountered regarding the payment of fines through the Faso Arzeka platform, with some users struggling to understand the process. Efforts are underway to provide clearer instructions.

The National Police reiterated the necessity of wearing helmets correctly and warned against negotiating fines. Operation "Head Shield" will continue in Bogand, focusing on ensuring adherence to helmet laws and reducing risks associated with two- and three-wheeled vehicle traffic.
