President Traor Advocates for African Control of Information Space at UACO 2026

Ouagadougou:The President of Burkina Faso, Captain Ibrahim Traor, has urged African stakeholders to gain control over the continent's information space, emphasizing the need for sovereignty in communication. This call was made during the opening of the 15th edition of the African Universities of Communication (UACO) held in Ouagadougou.

According to Burkina Information Agency, President Traor's message, delivered by Prime Minister Rimtalba Jean Emmanuel Oudraogo, highlighted the importance of Africa speaking for itself across various platforms including media and social networks. He encouraged journalists, communicators, and content creators to ensure accuracy and context in their work while developing digital skills and critical thinking.

The UACO event, taking place at Joseph Ki-Zerbo University until October 9, brings together communication professionals to discuss the theme "In a context of communication warfare, what attitudes and skills are needed for information and communication actors in Africa?" This edition seeks to cultivate a new generation of professionals adept in contemporary challenges and technology, capable of responsibly representing African voices.

The conference features 35 selected presentations and includes the Media Stakeholders Forum of the Confederation of Sahel States (AES) and the inaugural "Golden Lovers" awards, recognizing excellence in communication.

Minister of Communication Gilbert Oudraogo emphasized the strategic value of information, stating it should influence perceptions, guide behaviors, and shape opinions. He expressed the hope that insights gained at UACO would enhance practices, inform public policy, and improve communication strategies across African nations.
