Authorities Encourage Inmate Reintegration Through Innovative Projects

Ouahigouya:Administrative, customary, and religious authorities visited the Ouahigouya Detention and Correction Center (MACO) on October 5 to acknowledge and encourage the achievements of its residents. These activities are designed to support the inmates' future reintegration into society.

According to Burkina Information Agency, the visit coincided with the second phase of the Patriotic Engagement and Citizen Participation Days (JEPPC). Thomas Yampa, the governor of Yaadga, invited local stakeholders to observe the remarkable projects initiated by the inmates, which align with the event's theme of producing and consuming local Burkinabe products.

Within the prison's one-hectare area, inmates are engaged in growing various crops, including corn, onions, and eggplants, as part of an agro-silvo-pastoral initiative launched by the Burkinabe government. Supported by the Northern Regional Special Delegation, some inmates have also received training in fish farming, leading to the construction of a pond that houses over five hundred fish.

Armand Sawadogo, Director General of MACO, expressed gratitude to the visiting authorities and called for further support from the community to enhance the training experiences of the inmates. The residents are also involved in other vocational activities, such as making traditional loincloths, weaving, and soap making.
