Baku:The Ministry of Agriculture announced the launch of a sustainable solid waste management strategy covering 2026-2030 to tackle the 3 to 4 million tons of waste produced annually. The plan involves state intervention alongside municipalities to address illegal dumping and preserve the country's image, according to the ministry's deputy secretary general, Yassia Kindo.
According to Burkina Information Agency, the strategy includes providing material support to field actors, notably women and SMEs involved in waste pre-collection and collection. Modern transport and protection equipment will replace traditional carts. Public trash cans will be deployed in major cities, such as Ouagadougou and Bobo-Dioulasso, accompanied by a public awareness campaign and enforcement measures against littering. The environmental police and "LABAL" brigade will enforce compliance.
Data from Pollution Director Arouna Dolbzanga reveals that Ouagadougou and Bobo-Dioulasso generate nearly 800,000 to 900,000 tons of waste annually. The framework document for 2026-2028 aims to improve waste management sectors and promote a circular economy.
Salif Sanfo, from Eco-Tampoures, supports the strategy with the "100,000 Eco-Tampoures" initiative, promoting waste sorting and recycling. Locally made bins will help direct waste to recycling channels, aiding the production of compost and new products from plastics, like paving stones. Sanfo welcomes the new national framework as a chance to strengthen partnerships.
