Nakambé Region Focuses on Water Resource Mobilization for Food Security

Tenkodogo:The Nakambé Regional Agricultural Development Centre (CRSA) is actively engaging stakeholders to focus on water resource mobilization as a means to ensure food security and sovereignty. The first ordinary session of the General Assembly of the Regional Food Security Council, presided over by Governor Comrade Yiyé Abraham SOMDO, was held in Tenkodogo to assess the food situation and prioritize actions to sustainably enhance agricultural, forestry, livestock, and fisheries production systems.

According to Burkina Information Agency, the session, themed "Food security in the Nakambé region what strategies and synergies to mobilize water resources in the face of climate change," brought together various stakeholders including high commissioners, regional council members, and representatives from NGOs and civil society organizations. Governor SOMDO highlighted the importance of the CRSA in coordinating the implementation of the National Food Security Strategy and emphasized the essential role of producing and consuming locally to achieve national sovereignty.

The Governor praised the efforts of the Defense and Security Forces and the Volunteers for the Defense of the Homeland, which facilitated the return of over 78,000 Internally Displaced Persons to their original localities, thus aiding in the revival of agricultural activities. He also stressed the critical link between water and food security, pointing out the adverse effects of climate change on production yields and incomes.

Workshop sessions included a presentation by the Regional Directorate of Agriculture, Water, Animal, and Fisheries Resources, noting an improvement in cereal production for the 2025-2026 agro-pastoral campaign. Despite this, vulnerabilities remain due to irregular rainfall and insecurity, affecting food access for the most vulnerable households.

Participants proposed several measures to improve water resource mobilization, such as supporting the Emergency Dry Campaign Plan, conducting vulnerability studies, and enhancing water systems in resettled villages. The session concluded with a commitment to translating these recommendations into actionable steps to bolster the region's food security and sovereignty.
