Bobo-Dioulasso:Dutch cyclist Jonathan Kerkhofs emerged victorious in the 4th stage of the Tour du Faso, which covered 116.1 kilometers in Bobo-Dioulasso. Kerkhofs outpaced Moroccan competitor Youssef Bdadou in the final stretch, while South African Gustav Basson maintained his position as the overall leader, retaining the yellow jersey.
According to Burkina Information Agency, the stage witnessed the withdrawal of Dutch cyclist Tom Wijfje, the previous holder of the yellow jersey. This development allowed Gustav Basson, who was Wijfje's closest competitor, to take over the leader's jersey before the start of the stage.
The race began with a breakaway group of 13 riders, including Youssef Bdadou, South African Émile Van Niekerk, Cameroonian Ivan Dylan Njonkoue Wogue, and Burkinabe Saturnin Yaméogo. They managed to keep their lead from the peloton, where close attention was paid to Paul Daumont and the new yellow jersey holder.
Youssef Bdadou was particularly active, winning the last two intermediate sprints and securing bonus seconds. However, he was overtaken by Kerkhofs in the final 100 meters. Kerkhofs completed the stage in 2 hours, 31 minutes, and 13 seconds, achieving an average speed of 44.028 km/h. Bdadou dedicated his performance to his compatriot Tom Wijfje, who had to abandon the race.
In the overall standings, Gustav Basson maintains the lead despite finishing eighth. Soumaïla Ilboudo of Burkina Faso is now in second place and holds the white jersey as the best young rider, trailing the leader by 41 seconds. Paul Daumont's 19th-place finish in the stage pushed him to fifth in the general classification, 1 minute and 5 seconds behind the leader.
In terms of distinctive jerseys, Algerian Hamza Yacine claimed the green jersey for the points classification, while Youssef Bdadou received the pink jersey for intermediate sprints. The Tour du Faso will continue with the fifth stage, spanning 131.32 kilometers, as it moves to Pâ on Tuesday.
