Gbomblora:French education and research unions have called for a national strike on November 10, 2026. This decision was announced in a joint statement from the trade union organizations, which was published on the website of the General Confederation of Labour (CGT) Education.
According to Burkina Information Agency, the unions are advocating for a day of action, including demonstrations, rallies, and strikes, targeting youth and staff within the National Education system, as well as those in higher education and research sectors.
The strike call comes in response to the government's plan to hold a conference on wages on November 9th, which the unions suspect may exclude public sector representatives. The unions have expressed concern that such an exclusion would be perceived as a provocation.
The unions are demanding several changes, including salary increases for teachers and other school staff, the creation of more positions, improved working conditions, and increased budget allocations for education and research. Specifically, they are requesting the creation of 15,000 permanent positions to enhance teaching and research conditions, the reversal of job cuts planned in the 2027 budget, and a budget that supports permanent employment in higher education and research.
The unions have also criticized police interventions against participants in past demonstrations and have urged authorities to cease repressive measures targeting students and teachers.
