France: several dozen students excluded for “apology of terrorism”

PARIS, Several dozen students in France have been excluded from their establishment while awaiting disciplinary procedures relating to the apology of terrorism, announced the Minister of National Education and Youth, Gabriel Attal, during a hearing in parliament.

“There was a minute of silence in France yesterday, and in the overwhelming majority of cases this moment of tribute took place with the deepest dignity and the greatest respect,” Mr. Attal said. “However, 179 students made another choice, that of disrupting this meditation and provoking the school and insulting the memory of our teachers, our nation. »

He added that “179 referrals to the public prosecutor are being made today to initiate proceedings against these students”. “For the most serious cases, several dozen of them which concern the apology of terrorism, I order the exclusion of these students pending disciplinary procedures,” added Mr. Attal.

On October 13, a 20-year-old young man committed a knife attack at a high school in Arras, in the north of France, where he killed literature teacher Dominique Bernard and injured another teacher and a security guard. . The attacker was arrested. He was the subject of surveillance by agents of the General Directorate of Internal Security (DGSI). A similar attack on a school was later foiled in the capital region. The government has activated the “emergency attack” level of the Vigipirate system, the highest, and has taken measures to strengthen the security of educational establishments.
