The commune of Méguet, located in the province of Ganzourgou, Central Plateau region, celebrated the sixth edition of the National Tree Day (JNA) on August 10, 2024. Held under the patronage of the governor of the region, Sy Assetou Barry/Traoré, and chaired by the High Commissioner of the province, Aminata Sorgho/Gouba, this day was marked by reforestation initiatives aimed at promoting a sustainable environment.The slogan chosen for this celebration, "One household, two trees for resilience in the face of climate change", reflects the urgency of strengthening the vegetation cover in a context where the effects of climate change are increasingly felt. Under the patronage of El Hadj Issouf Kaboré, CEO of the Buud-nooma company, and the co-sponsorship of former Minister Joseph Kaboré, represented by Mr. Émile Kaboré, this day brought together a large crowd, testifying to the importance of the event for the community.The celebration began with the broadcast sowing of more than 300 balls of seeds of thorny species in the village forest of Koulwéogo.This technique, described as innovative by the provincial director in charge of the environment of Ganzourgou, Sayouba Sigué, aims to promote the natural regeneration of forests. In addition to this seeding, 300 fruit species plants were planted, 103 plants at the home of the chief of Méguet and the rest in households, thus materializing the slogan of the day.In her speech, the Prefect of Méguet stressed the importance of preserving the environment and highlighted the many benefits of trees for ecosystems and the quality of life of populations. She also warned against the dangers of deforestation and called for collective awareness to counter the devastating effects of climate change.The High Commissioner of the province, Aminata Sorgho/Gouba, for her part, recalled the importance not only of planting trees, but also of ensuring their maintenance to ensure their growth. She praised the exemplary mobilization of the populations and partners, without whom this da y could not have been a success. She also shared a Beninese adage: "He who has planted a tree before dying has not lived in vain", a quote that resonated with the spirit of the day.The main objectives of the celebration were to raise awareness among the population about the importance of trees and the preservation of the environment, to fight against deforestation and its harmful effects, to promote the natural regeneration of forests, and to improve air quality to make living environments healthier.The Naba Saaga, Chief of Méguet, visibly moved, expressed his gratitude to the authorities for choosing his commune to host this significant event. He called on his fellow citizens to ensure the survival of the seedlings planted, thus emphasizing the responsibility of each and every one in the fight for a greener future.
