Sapouy: Celebrated every June 5, World Environment Day was commemorated on Saturday in Sapouy, capital of Ziro province, under the theme: 'Fight against plastic pollution.' This day of local awareness was marked by a visit from provincial and municipal authorities to places of business to make shopkeepers aware of the urgency of maintaining their healthy living environment.
According to Burkina Information Agency, the event saw a general mobilization on June 14, with the High Commissioner of Ziro Province, the President of the Special Delegation (PDS) of the commune, the defense and security forces, heads of technical services, women's associations, the press, and members of the citizen monitoring committee traveling through the commercial arteries of Sapouy. Their mission was to raise awareness among traders about the consequences of plastic pollution and unsanitary conditions, especially in commercial areas.
During the visit, traders expressed their willingness to cooperate but highlighted a significant challenge: the lack of suitable places for dumping waste. In response, the PDS announced plans to create two new dump sites to complement the existing main site, addressing the traders' concerns.
The High Commissioner emphasized the civic responsibility of shopkeepers, stating, "Every shopkeeper will now have to install a trash can in front of their place of business." He also urged restaurant owners and shopkeepers near gutters to stop disposing of waste in them, as these conduits have become dumping grounds due to incivility.
Local residents pointed out that the poor condition of the gutters, which are often uncovered and uncleaned, contributes to the problem. The authorities acknowledged this observation, stressing the shared responsibility for sustainable environmental management.
Through this initiative, Ziro authorities aim to foster a lasting change in behavior, focusing on local awareness, exemplary conduct, and community involvement, as environmental protection begins with small everyday actions.
