Bankoni Residents Harvest Corn to Boost School Canteen Supplies

Bankoni:Tuy The residents of Bankoni, located in the commune of Béréba, gathered to harvest corn from the local school field. This community effort, undertaken on October 28, 2026, aims to support the school's canteen by utilizing the corn harvest. The school field spans one and a half hectares and is used to cultivate both corn and cowpeas.

According to Burkina Information Agency, the school council president, Mathias Pagabelguem, stated that the corn harvest follows the earlier cowpea harvest. Despite unfavorable rainfall conditions this year, Pagabelguem expressed gratitude for the yield and acknowledged the community's support in the endeavor.

Amidou Pagabelguem, a member of the school council, highlighted the community's active participation and identified the lack of storage facilities as a significant challenge. Ouéhilowoué Bihoun, the headmistress of Bankoni's public primary school, praised the efforts of the approximately fifty women and ten men who took part in the harvest.

The recent corn harvest succeeded the cowpea harvest that took place on October 21st, which yielded six 100 kg bags, equaling a total of 600 kg from one hectare. These cowpeas were threshed and bagged for storage. Agnindé Tiamkuy/Koura, president of the Bankoni women's coordination committee, emphasized that the women's involvement is driven by their commitment to enhancing the children's well-being. She noted that the school canteen plays a crucial role in helping students concentrate better in their classes and increases their school attendance. The harvest day was capped off with a community meal.
