Baporo Penitentiary Center Achieves Success with Prisoner Integration Through Agriculture


Sanguie: The Baporo Penitentiary Center’s initiative to integrate prisoners through agricultural work is proving to be a significant success. Inmates at the center are actively participating in agricultural activities on a 130-hectare site, which was developed and sown during the rainy season. The harvest for this season is projected to yield 250 tons of grain. A government delegation visited the site recently, witnessing the success of this program, which is part of a broader presidential initiative aimed at the social integration of prisoners.



According to Burkina Information Agency, the initiative, led by Captain Ibrahim TRAORE, is part of a strategy to integrate prisoners from various correctional facilities through community service and trade learning. Inmates are working diligently on the Baporo agricultural site, contributing to the nation’s goal of achieving food self-sufficiency.



At the site, hectares of thriving crops such as corn, rice, sorghum, cowpeas, and soybeans are being cultivated by the inmates. The commitment shown by the prisoners is evident, and the corn crops are notably progressing well.



The supervising minister, Maitre Edasso Rodrigues Balaya, along with Minister of State Ismael Sombie and the Minister of Labor and Civil Service, expressed their satisfaction during their visit to the site. They were impressed by the quality of the fields and the dedication of the inmates.



During the visit, the delegation observed the inmates working in organized groups, demonstrating a strong sense of community and purpose. The authorities engaged with the inmates, providing guidance on their future reintegration into society and sharing the vision of the Head of State, Captain Ibrahim Traore, regarding community service in prisons.



Minister of Agriculture, Commander Ismael Sombie, emphasized the goal of making the Baporo penitentiary center a model for prisoner reintegration. He praised the inmates for their dedication to the country’s food self-sufficiency goals and thanked the Minister of Justice for effectively implementing the agricultural sites.



Minister Rodrigues Edasso Balaya acknowledged the efforts of the penal chain and prison administration in executing the government’s community service policy, highlighting the success of the agricultural endeavors at Baporo.
