Beun High School Embraces Cultural Heritage with Koko Dunda Initiative

Sissili: Students and faculty at Beun High School, situated 25 km from To in Sissili province, have officially committed to promoting local heritage through the adoption of the Koko Dunda as a symbol of patriotism. This move, initiated by educational authorities, was declared on Monday, March 2, 2026.

According to Burkina Information Agency, the school courtyard buzzed with excitement as the majority of the 521 students donned the Koko Dunda in place of their usual khaki uniforms. The day commenced with a flag-raising ceremony accompanied by the Ditany¨, passionately sung by students in green, white, and black attire.

Pierre Kiemde, a staff representative, emphasized that the initiative transcends mere clothing and aligns with the ideals of the progressive and popular revolution led by Captain Ibrahim Traore. He noted that the selection of the Koko Dunda reflects the area's wooded environment.

Principal Nicod¨me Yameogo explained that the implementation aligns with government vision and provincial education directives. After consulting various stakeholders, the Koko Dunda was chosen for its harmony with the local vegetation, and he expressed gratitude for the parental support despite socio-economic challenges.

Students displayed enthusiasm for the reform. Senior student Pauline Zizien viewed it as a means to integrate local roots into education, fostering national development. Junior student Fadoul Kadio appreciated the 'sense of distinction' and economic benefits of promoting local production.

Despite the cultural celebration, Beun High School, which evolved from a junior high school in 2010 to a full-fledged high school in 2022, faces significant challenges. Principal Yameogo highlighted issues such as lack of a secure fence, limited electricity, and absence of administrative buildings, forcing teachers to work under trees.

He noted budgetary constraints but praised the staff's dedication and positive first-term outcomes. The school's goals include achieving high pass rates for transition classes, the BEPC, and the Baccalaureate.

Through the Koko Dunda initiative, Beun High School aims to encourage students to reconnect with their cultural roots, contributing to the province's educational mission since its founding in 2010.
