Bilharzia Treatment Campaign Targets Over 62,000 Children in Manni District

Manni:More than 62,000 children in the Manni health district, aged between 5 and 14, are set to receive treatment for bilharzia during a campaign scheduled from October 26 to 31, 2026. The campaign was initiated at a meeting chaired by Emmanuel Tindano, President of the Special Delegation of Manni, aiming to engage community leaders in the protection of children's health.

According to Burkina Information Agency, the advocacy meeting, held at the Medical Center, brought together administrative, traditional, and religious leaders to position them as key intermediaries in informing the public, reassuring parents, and encouraging participation in the campaign. Dr. Lacina Traore, chief medical officer of the health district, outlined the objectives of achieving 100% therapeutic coverage for the targeted children, with 46,594 beneficiaries in Manni and 15,674 in Thion.

Organizers highlighted the significant public health concern posed by bilharzia, also known as schistosomiasis, which can severely affect children’s development and well-being. The disease is spread through contact with contaminated freshwater and can lead to serious health complications if untreated. The treatment, praziquantel, will be distributed free, with dosages adjusted to each child's weight, and side effects expected to be mild.

Emmanuel Tindano urged leaders to actively raise awareness and encourage families to participate in the campaign, highlighting the importance of collective responsibility. Participants committed to promoting the campaign dates, educating parents on the treatment's importance, and assisting in identifying uninformed households. They also vowed to address any rumors or concerns that might impede community involvement.

The campaign's success will largely depend on parental trust and effective community communication, with the ultimate goal of maximizing children's participation and benefiting from this preventive health intervention.
