Bobo-Dioulasso: An association of weavers from Faso Danfani launches its activities

Bobo-Dioulasso, The Generation Fashion Women Weavers Association (GEFAFET) which promotes the weaving of Faso Danfani launched on Saturday its activities aimed at creating employment for vulnerable women and contribute to their development.

“The structure promotes Faso Danfani but beyond, it allows to train a critical mass of women in the dyeing, sewing and weaving trades”, declared the president of the Association, Fatima Drabo.

GEFAFET currently employs 30 women, in particular unmarried mothers and widows out of 100 members who earn their living there.

For Ms. Drabo, Faso Danfani is a national pride and a cultural identity at the international level which remains a source of jobs and income for those involved in the field.

“However, unlike other regions of the country, the western region and specifically the city of Bobo-Dioulasso seems to remain on the margins of the production of this loincloth,” she added.

According to the president, despite the efforts of the public authorities in favor of the financial empowerment of women, several thousand of the city of Bobo-Dioulasso live in precarious situations.

The association received 15 looms from the Minister in charge of Handicrafts and 20 from the vice-president of the Hauts-Bassins regional consular delegation, Al Hassan Sienou.

“This donation will allow this young association to work better in the dynamics of employability of vulnerable women and the promotion of Faso Danfani in Burkina Faso and abroad”, indicated the representative of the Minister in charge of crafts, Augustin Bambara.

Ms. Drabo thanked the authorities for the support and requested their support to acquire a larger space.

She also wanted to have access to drinking water on the site and also bicycles to facilitate the movement of women.
