Yako: A woman prosecuted for poisoning her two children was sentenced to life imprisonment by the Criminal Chamber of the High Court of Yako, during an extraordinary session held on June 15, according to a judicial source.
According to Burkina Information Agency, the evidence presented at the trial dates the events back to February 11, 2017. The defendant, identified by the initials YH, was found in distress at her home in the company of her two children. The two children were rushed to the Medical Center with surgical unit (CMA) in Yako, but they did not survive.
The investigation opened by the Yako Central Police Station led to the mother being implicated, who admitted to the facts during her hearing. According to her statements reported at the hearing, she acted after learning of her husband's intention to marry his late uncle's widow. She explained that she had bought three tablets unfit for human consumption at the Yako market, before consuming them and administering them to her children.
The defendant stated that she had wanted to end her own life and those of her children, but survived while the two minors succumbed. At the conclusion of the proceedings, the court followed the recommendations of the Prosecutor of Faso and sentenced her to life imprisonment.
