Burkina Faso and Ghana Commence Border Reaffirmation Works

Nahouri: The Governor of the Nazinon region, Massalado Yvette Nacoulma Sanou, presided over the installation ceremony for the members of the Joint Commission for the Reaffirmation of the Burkina Faso-Ghana border and the launch of the border reaffirmation works in P´.

According to Burkina Information Agency, the ceremony was attended by the Ghanaian Ambassador, Kenneth Akibat©, who represented the Ghanaian Minister of Lands and Natural Resources. The Joint Commission for the Reaffirmation (CMPR) comprises 20 members, with 10 representing each country. Their primary task will be to demarcate and reaffirm the territorial limits, transforming the borders into gateways for exchange, peace, and shared prosperity.

To facilitate the commission’s mission, 8 days were dedicated to preparing the final document in P´. Governor Sanou emphasized the importance of the demarcation and reaffirmation, stating that these efforts are crucial for tranquility between neighboring countries and regional stability. She conveyed that this task, while delicate, is vital for consolidating national sovereignty.

Governor Sanou further highlighted that border reaffirmation goes beyond placing markers or geodetic reference points. It is about fortifying the sovereignty of nations. She stressed the importance of expertise, rigor, and impartiality in adhering to bilateral legal instructions during this process.

The reaffirmation and materialization of the territorial boundaries aim not to divide communities living on either side of the approximately 583 km-long border. Fid¨le Gouem, the permanent secretary of the national border commission, remarked on the importance of clearly defining the space over which each State exercises its sovereignty.

Following the launch ceremony, officials proceeded to Dakola on the Burkina Faso-Ghana border for a symbolic restoration of a marker. Ambassador Kenneth Akibat© expressed satisfaction with the progress, acknowledging the reaffirmation as a crucial step towards better administration of the border area.

The meeting included governors from Burkina Faso’s Dj´r´, Nakamb©, and Nando regions, as well as Ghana’s Upper East and Savanna regions, along with customary authorities from the border regions. This initiative was supported by GIZ/PFUA, with project manager Dr. Bakary Sanou present in P´.
