Ouagadougou: Experts, researchers, and actors in the agricultural world gathered at Joseph Ki-Zerbo University to celebrate the second edition of the International Plant Health Day (IPHD). The event featured communications and exchanges aimed at proposing concrete solutions adapted to the realities of Burkina Faso.
According to Burkina Information Agency, the celebration was co-organized by the Biosciences Laboratory (LABios) and the Laboratory of Functional and Applied Entomology (LEFA), under the theme: "Innovations in plant health: what levers for sovereignty and food security in Burkina Faso." The scientific meeting brought together a diverse group of stakeholders, including researchers, agricultural production representatives, and plant health specialists, to discuss and present potential solutions tailored to the needs of the population.
Professor Adama Sanou, representing the president of UJKZ, highlighted that May 12 is dedicated to the International Day of Plant Health by the United Nations. The day aims to raise awareness about the importance of plant protection in combating hunger and poverty, as well as preserving biodiversity and the environment. The Vice-President in charge of research and university cooperation at UJKZ emphasized that the event provides a platform for sharing experiences, knowledge, and advocacy on issues related to plant health and food security.
Professor Sanou stressed the importance of high-performing, resilient, and environmentally friendly agriculture for Burkina Faso's food sovereignty. He called on stakeholders to promote innovative, local solutions adapted to the national context. Professor Kadidia Kota, chairwoman of the JISV organizing committee, underscored that innovation in plant health is an existential necessity for the people of Burkina Faso. She explained that the event serves as a space for dialogue and collective construction, bringing together practitioners, experts, decision-makers, and producers.
The ceremony's sponsor, Georges Bazongo, director of programs for the NGO Tree Aid, urged stakeholders to collaborate in promoting innovations in plant health and strengthening the country's food sovereignty. He highlighted the essential role of academic institutions and research centers in advancing research and development in plant health, which can transform agriculture in Burkina Faso.
