Burkina Faso: Dr. Tiendrebeogo Advocates for Cultural Sector Structuring to Boost Development in New Essay

Ouagadougou: Dr. Pingdewinde Issiaka Tiendrebeogo, a teacher-researcher and lecturer at Joseph KI-ZERBO University, signed copies of his second book, "The Challenges of Structuring the Cultural Sector in Burkina Faso," on Saturday in Ouagadougou. The book is a scientific essay that analyzes the challenges of cultural governance and proposes ways to make culture a lever for the country's development.

According to Burkina Information Agency, the 204-page work is structured into five chapters and tackles issues related to cultural governance, the professionalization of actors, public policies, and the cultural sector's contribution to Burkina Faso's socio-economic development. Dr. Jacob Yarabatioula, the presenter of the work, noted that the book employs a cross-methodology combining qualitative and quantitative research to provide relevant data on the state of the Burkinabe cultural sector.

Dr. Tiendrebeogo addresses a central issue: what are the advantages of an effective structuring of the cultural sector in Burkina Faso? To answer this, he proposes three starting hypotheses: the existence of a coherent national cultural policy supported by the ministry in charge of culture, the presence of a national confederation of culture with active branches, and the effective involvement of public, private actors, and non-governmental organizations in the structuring process.

Dr. Yarabatioula emphasized the main objective of the study is to understand the mechanisms and impacts of structuring the cultural sector in Burkina Faso. Specifically, the study aims to identify the public and private bodies involved, showcase the interest and role of different actors, and analyze the impact of this organization on the country's overall development.

He highlighted that Dr. Tiendrebeogo's work demonstrates that culture is crucial for social cohesion, heritage enhancement, and national identity strengthening. The structuring of the cultural sector is seen as a strategic issue for Burkina Faso's future, where culture can play a major role in consolidating peace, unity, and resilience.

Dr. Yarabatioula called for ongoing dialogue between various stakeholders to reduce conflicts, improve coordination, and build a common vision for cultural development. He stressed the need for strengthening institutions, professionalizing cultural actors, improving financing mechanisms, and consolidating associative and federative networks.

Dr. Tiendrebeogo, through this publication, offers an in-depth reflection on the challenges, opportunities, and prospects for structuring the Burkinab¨ cultural sector. He aims to contribute to discussions on the future of the cultural sector in Burkina Faso, targeting cultural professionals, researchers, students, public decision-makers, and anyone interested in cultural policy and development.

The book, available at the Mercury bookstore and from the author for 15,000 CFA francs, aspires to be a key reference work for cultural governance discussions in Burkina Faso. The book launch concluded with a signing session.

Dr. Tiendrebeogo, a lecturer and researcher specializing in theatre studies, has several scholarly publications. He won the Filiga Prize for Letters and Arts in 2025 and 2026 in the Theatre category with his work "The Barriers of Intolerance," promoting unity in a Sahel confronted with terrorism. He was honored as a Knight of the Order of Merit for Arts, Letters and Communication in 2025 for his cultural commitment in Burkina Faso.
