Burkina faso: The Ministry of Security announced on Tuesday that, starting October 1st, the date of the start of the school year, a fine of 3000 FCFA will be applied to those not wearing helmets and their vehicles will be immobilized until the helmet is presented.

According to Burkina Information Agency, the measures were detailed in a statement from Minister of Security Mahamadou Sana, dated September 15, 2026. The statement emphasizes the imposition of a 3,000 FCFA fine for drivers operating without helmets and that vehicles will remain immobilized until a protective helmet is produced.

This initiative coincides with the beginning of the school year, a time noted for increased road traffic and heightened risk of traffic accidents. The Ministry's statement highlights this period as a critical time for enforcing road safety measures.

Comrade Sana indicated the end of the administrative tolerance phase, during which non-compliant individuals were merely informed of the rules and turned back, without facing sanctions. This phase will officially conclude on October 1st.

The Ministry has directed relevant services to enhance enforcement and ensure strict compliance with this regulation. Citizens are urged to adhere to the measure, which aims to protect lives, particularly those of pupils and students, and to promote a collective sense of responsibility for road safety.

Despite the introduction of helmet laws in 1973, enforcement has been challenging for successive governments. However, recent months have seen an increase in compliance due to intensified checks, resulting in a noticeable reduction in offenders.
