Burkina Faso Foreign Minister Calls for Enhanced Communication in Diplomatic Missions

Ouagadougou:Foreign Minister Karamoko Jean Marie Traor has urged the heads of Burkina Faso's diplomatic missions and consular posts to strengthen communication to prevent management dysfunctions. This appeal was made during a webinar on budget management of embassies and consulates general, held on October 21, 2026.

According to Burkina Information Agency, the meeting saw participation, both in person and online, from representatives of various governmental bodies, including the High Authority for State Control and the Fight Against Corruption (ASCE-LC), the General Inspectorate of Finance, the Technical Inspectorate of the Treasury, the State Judicial Agent, the Directorate General of Real Estate Affairs and State Equipment (DGAIE), and the National Social Security Fund (CNSS). These bodies are involved in overseeing or supporting the operation of the diplomatic missions.

The meeting, the second of its kind, underscores the Ministry of Foreign Affairs' commitment to enhancing diplomatic governance amid demands for resource rationalization, transparency, and accountability. It follows audit and advisory missions that identified recurring shortcomings in administrative, accounting, and financial management, as well as misinterpretations of regulatory texts.

Minister Traor emphasized the importance of improving communication within diplomatic missions and between the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and other departments, especially the Ministry of Finance, as a means to address these dysfunctions. The Ministry of Finance highlighted the necessity of training diplomatic staff in budget management to mitigate frequent shortcomings.

Digitalization of services within the diplomatic missions was proposed as a method to enhance operational transparency. Additionally, the CNSS representative highlighted the need to register diplomatic staff for better pension management, prompting Minister Traor to propose a special session with the CNSS on this matter.

The meeting concluded with a call for greater rigor and discipline in the use of state property and the encouragement of acquiring real estate to transition from tenant to owner status. The heads of the diplomatic missions were urged to implement the meeting’s observations and recommendations to ensure compliance with Burkina Faso's regulations.
