Burkina Faso Health Ministry Unveils Plans for New Heart Institute and Health Infrastructure

Ouagadougou: The Minister of Health, Dr. Robert Lucien Jean-Claude Kargougou, announced the construction of several health infrastructures in 2026, including a heart institute, to sustainably improve access to quality care and strengthen national health sovereignty.

According to Burkina Information Agency, Dr. Kargougou chaired the first ordinary session of the Health Sectoral Dialogue Framework (CASD), where the sectoral performance report and the consolidated assessment of the 2021-2025 National Development Policy (PND) were reviewed, alongside the 2026-2030 sectoral plan. The session was marked by the announcement regarding the construction of new health infrastructures.

The report highlighted major achievements in the health sector, such as the commissioning of the Pala hospital in Bobo-Dioulasso, the opening of a hemodialysis center in Gaoua, the installation of a radiotherapy center in Bobo-Dioulasso, the performance of cardiac surgery interventions, and the first kidney transplant at the Tengandogo University Hospital Center.

According to Dr. Kargougou, these initiatives align with axis 3 of the National Development Policy, focused on human capital and national solidarity, aiming to promote access to health for all. He noted that the period from 2021 to 2025 saw a significant transformation in the health system, aiming at sustainable improvement in access to quality care and the strengthening of national health sovereignty.

The year 2026 will focus on consolidating the achievements of 2025. As part of the Presidential Initiative for Health, preparatory work for constructing a heart institute is already underway, with plans to lay the foundation stone within the year.

Dr. Kargougou also mentioned the Head of State, Captain Ibrahim Traore's announcement about launching a program to build nine regional university hospitals. The Goulmou region will initiate this program, a significant project in the health sector for the current year.

The Sectoral Dialogue Framework involves various ministerial departments related to health, humanitarian action, agriculture, the environment, scientific research, and sport. It serves as a platform for accountability, collective learning, and strategic planning, aiming at the continuous improvement of socio-economic conditions for the Burkinab¨ population.
