Ouagadougou: A multidisciplinary team from the Koudougou Regional Hospital Center (CHR) successfully removed a large intra-abdominal tumor weighing nearly 10 kilograms from a 71-year-old patient on July 13, 2026, the Ministry of Health announced on Monday, praising the progress of the technical platform of regional hospitals and the strengthening of the skills of health personnel in Burkina Faso.
According to Burkina Information Agency, this highly technical operation represents a major step forward in the development of specialized surgery within regional health structures, demonstrating their ability to provide care for complex pathologies as close as possible to the population.
The intervention was conducted by the visceral surgeon, Dr. Alfred Ibrango, at the head of a multidisciplinary team including surgeons, anesthesiologists and intensivists, nursing and obstetrical engineers, nurses, biologists, hospital hygiene technicians, medical imaging technicians, pharmacists and administrative staff.
The ministry indicated that this success is the result of the synergy between the different professional bodies mobilized around the patient in order to guarantee safe care that meets quality requirements.
For health authorities, this medical feat also reflects the effects of investments made in recent years to strengthen hospital infrastructure. The acquisition of modern equipment, combined with ongoing training for staff, now allows regional hospitals to perform procedures that were once reserved for a few specialized facilities.
The patient is currently continuing his recovery at home and his health is progressing favorably, the ministry said.
