Ouagadougou: The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) launched the 7th edition of its national competition for the best journalistic work on humanitarian issues on Wednesday in Ouagadougou. Submissions are expected between April 8 and November 6, 2026.
According to Burkina Information Agency, the competition is themed "From assistance to autonomy: when humanitarian aid contributes to the recovery of communities" and is open to both professional and student journalists. Submissions can be made at the ICRC offices located in Ouagadougou, Guiriko, Goulmou, Liptako, Soum, and Yagha, or via email to szalissa@iccrorg.
Emeline Ouboulbiga/Yam©ogo, the communication/prevention coordinator, stated that the competition aims to promote humanitarian action and international humanitarian law within the Burkinabe media. The competition will reward outstanding productions in print, broadcast, and online media. The inclusion of journalism schools marks a new development in this edition.
During the event, Gyengani Jean No«l, the representative of the Director General of Communication and Media, expressed the ministry's appreciation for the ICRC's sustained initiative. He emphasized that the competition significantly contributes to enhancing the media's role in highlighting humanitarian issues and promoting information that serves the public interest.
Mr. Gyengani highlighted the importance of journalism in not only reporting facts but also in providing context and facilitating a better understanding of the realities faced by communities. He reiterated the Ministry of Communication's commitment to supporting efforts that enhance information quality and promote journalism that fosters development, peace, and social cohesion.
He concluded by urging media professionals and journalism students to engage with the competition actively and produce content that addresses the challenges facing Burkina Faso.
