Ouagadougou: The government of Burkina Faso has introduced a new decree requiring all Burkinabe students who seek to study abroad, whether on scholarships or through self-funding, to obtain prior authorization from the Ministry of Higher Education. This decision was made official following the Council of Ministers meeting as noted in their minutes.
According to Burkina Information Agency, the Minister of Higher Education, Adjima Thiombiano, explained that the decree aims to align the training content with the Popular Progressive Revolution's vision, mitigate potential social issues upon students' return, and ensure their smooth professional integration. The decree represents a strategic move to ensure that educational pursuits abroad are in harmony with national goals and labor market needs.
The decree also includes a revision and update of the system for higher education and research scholarships, which was initiated by the Ministry of Higher Education, Research and Innovation. Minister Thiombiano highlighted that this revision is a continuation of efforts to refine the 2021 decree on scholarships, aligning it with the government's evolving priorities and vision. Key changes include the removal of the parental income criterion for scholarship eligibility and the delegation of financial aid management to the Education and Research Support Fund (FOSER Bngr baoobo). This initiative also emphasizes the need for structured supervision of students' studies abroad to ensure their academic and professional endeavors contribute positively to the nation's development.
