Ouagadougou: The Ministry of Health in Burkina Faso has issued a critical directive to all health establishments, emphasizing the mandatory admission of patients to emergency services without any conditions or prior rejection.

According to Burkina Information Agency, the ministry circulated a document reminding healthcare facilities of their obligation to receive, triage, and care for any patient arriving at an emergency department. The directive underscores that no patient should be redirected or refused without a proper assessment by a qualified healthcare professional, who can determine the urgency of the situation and provide necessary first aid.

The ministry's circular addresses issues where patients have been redirected to other facilities without prior clinical evaluation, attributed to reasons such as bed shortages, overwhelmed reception capacities, or lack of a referral form. It stresses that the health pyramid should serve as a framework for organizing care, prioritizing patient interest, clinical judgment, and public health needs.

Further clarifications in the document assert that bed unavailability or service saturation should not justify declining a clinical assessment or essential first aid. Healthcare teams are instructed to stabilize patients as much as possible before considering any transfers. Any transfer must be well-prepared and coordinated with the receiving facility, ensuring continuity of care through necessary medical information.

The circular also highlights that no patient with a medical or surgical emergency should be denied initial care due to the absence of a referral form or deviations from standard procedures. The ministry calls on healthcare facility managers to strictly enforce these provisions, underscoring that the protection of human life is the utmost priority.
