Burkina Faso President Enacts Law Restoring Historic National Motto.

Ouagadougou: The President of Faso, Captain Ibrahim Traoré, has officially promulgated the constitutional law reinstating Burkina Faso’s historic motto, “homeland or death, we will win,” as indicated by a decree received from the Burkina Information Agency.

According to Burkina Information Agency, Constitutional Law No. 033-2024/ALT, which revives the motto “homeland or death, we will conquer,” is set to come into effect within eight days starting Friday, November 22, 2024. This law was signed into action on Thursday, November 21, 2024, by Captain Ibrahim Traoré, the Head of State.

The newly amended article 34 of the constitution, originally established on June 11, 1990, specifies that the national symbols include an emblem, a coat of arms, an anthem, and a motto, with the motto being “homeland or death, we will conquer.”

Additionally, the promulgated law revises article 147 of the nation’s fundamental law, granting the National Assembly the exceptional authority to approve, by a three-quarters majority vo
te and following consultation with the Constitutional Council, agreements that could lead to Burkina Faso’s participation in a confederation, federation, or union of African states.

The revised article 37 also introduces a specific administrative body, termed the “Presidency of Faso,” to support the President of Faso in executing his duties, missions, and prerogatives.
